Does it ever seem like you struggle more with certain things in your life than other people? As if everyone around you is having an easier time at things than you are? You begin to feel sorry for yourself and think, “Why can’t I ever SUCCEED?”
For as long as I can remember I have always had a problem opening up to others. I have gotten better, but I always seem to be catching up to everyone else. But TODAY, I have decided to change things and I want you all to join me!!
My name is James and this is my blog detailing my weight loss journey and other important health topics including: supplements, how to track calories, popular diets, and much more. I know a lot of you, like me, have tried to lose weight only to eventually fail. Often, what makes matters worse is seeing others pull it off without even breaking a sweat.
The Up and Downs:
I wore XXL t-shirts and size 38 jeans. Back in 2011, I tore my ACL playing basketball which definitely didn’t help matters. I eventually got up to 237 lbs, my senior year of college and at that point, I decided to make a change.
After developing a gym routine and changing my eating habits, I lost about 24 lbs in 6 months. I could barely recognize myself and all the new self-confidence that came with the weight loss.
During the first 2 years of pharmacy school, I yo-yoed between 188-195lbs, which would be great for most people, but I wanted more. So in 2014, I began surfing the web for health tips and discovered the “Paleo Diet.” The diet focuses around restricting your food choices to, protein, fats and a selective amount of carbs (I will talk about Paleo when I go over all the different types of diets).
I incorporated paleo into my life along with my gym routine and the weight was flying off. I lost about 28 lbs in 42 days, which put me at 168lbs!!! To a man who grew up overweight, the number on the scale was great to see but my body had gone through an extremely drastic change. Since I wasn’t supplying my body with enough overall protein and calories, it caused me to lose A LOT of muscle mass.
A day of eating for me would be:
- Before Workout: A handful of blueberries
- Post Workout: A banana, orange, and spinach blended in a smoothie
- Lunch: Cauliflower rice, lettuce and a fist size of chicken
- Dinner: A bowl of grapes
When I visited my family and friends, they were all shocked at my new body, and not in a good way. Eventually, I started eating a lot more to get to a healthy weight that I could realistically maintain.
After doing some research, I started to learn why carbs, fats, and protein are important for the body and how we need an adequate amount of each to function correctly. Which led me to If It Fits in Your Macros or IIFYM. I cover how to calculate your macros in a future post.
I was content with what I had achieved at that moment. Now all I needed to fully achieve the body I wanted was to build some muscle mass. I decided to forego any strict weight tracking and just EAT and have some fun.
The results were interesting, to say the least. Although I had gotten stronger, in a matter of 3 months, I had gained 30 lbs. To see what I look like now, check out my starting point:
Now, it’s time to cut that fat off again and get back into shape!
What I want you guys to learn from my journey is that there will be obstacles, moments where you feel like quitting and you get frustrated. But you should never lose sight why you want to lose the weight. Think about the moment when you will finally achieve your goals and you won’t have to worry about losing weight anymore.
